One Acre Plot took place at Majestic Farm, a 77-acre property in Mountain Dale, NY comprised of pasture, woods, livestock, garden, pond and barn. Stewarded by Brett and Sara Budde who wrestle daily with the realities of their agrarian vision, the farm is considered in this exhibition as a site of laborious intervention. Local Sullivan County artists and New York City based artists made site specific work that responsive to facets of the agrarian principles in short-term residencies hosted by the farm.

In a playful repurposing of found material, Ann Cleary grafts objects along the natural fissure of a tree. Ethan Greenbaum’s photographs and sculptures of brick and plasticine mortar playfully dissect basic building materials and consider the architecture of in-between spaces. Michael DeLucia uses ordinary objects in the service of abstraction, this time in the form of a twisting segment of chain-link fence, a porous barrier that fails to function despite its utilitarian form. David Scanavino’s positive-negative concrete relief sculptures are formed by the impression of a coiled length of rope. Nicholas Emmet’s kite sculpture lodges into tree branches suspended in flight. Through the process of dendrochronology (the dating of trees), Erin Schneider’s Timber to Timbre interprets tree data into tonal sounds. Kara Lynch’s event-based audio recordings have addressed the slippage of history. For this exhibition, she amplifies the sound of a rainstorm. Julio Monterrey presents 2 psycho-magic performances addressing the life and death cycles. A looped video of credits lists the individuals that artist Andra Ursuta has known in her life. Paul Jacobsen’s mobile dwelling offers an escape plan from sedentary civilization and a critique of its trappings. Mark McNamara builds monumental structures using natural materials and constructs a functional arbor for the site. Yui Kugimiya’s painted animation videos are labor-intensive documentations of the painting process and narrative flights of fancy. Her videos will be presented in a screening accompanied by a score composed and performed live by Transit.
